Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, is the youngest son and child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The Prince was born on March 10, 1964. He is married to the former Sophie Rhys-Jones and has two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. Here are 10 things you should know about our dear Prince Edward. 

Prince Edward spent a gap year in New Zealand, where he worked as a a house tutor and junior master for two terms in September 1982 at the Wanganui Collegiate School in New Zealand ater he left Gordonstoun.

Prince Edward graduated in 1986 as BA (lower second class honours) and proceeded Master of Arts (Cantab) in 1991. This makes him the so far the fourth of only five members of the British Royal Family to have obtained a university degree.

Prince Edward dropped out of the grueling commando course after completing just one third of the 12-month training in 1987.

Edward opted for a career in entertainment, setting up Ardent Productions. The company was eventually dissolved after it bled cash.

The Prince’s wedding with Sophie Rhys-Jones on June 19, 1999 in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle was a significant break from the weddings that his older siblings staged.

Prince Edward was the only son of the Sovereign who was not created a royal duke. He was created Earl of Wessex and Viscount Served. It is assumed that the earl would take over his father’s title, Duke of Edinburgh, whenever it reverts back to the crown.

Prince Edward’s children, Louise and James, are the only male-line grandchildren of a sovereign who are styled the children of an Earl, rather than as Prince and Princess.
