Queen Elizabeth II in Scotland for the Royal Week, Tells MSPs to "Remain Calm" Despite Uncertainty

Queen Elizabeth II

The Royal Week is on—and the Queen has just urged the Scottish Parliament to remain calm despite these times of uncertainty.

Queen Elizabeth II urged everyone to stay calm following the uncertainty that the Brexit has brought to the nation. Despite the political uncertainty that has plagued Great Britain, the Queen seems tranquil and went to Scotland to make a surprise address as she opened the Scottish Parliament. This was the Queen’s first major speech following the Brexit.

The Queen acknowledged that “we all live and work in an increasingly complex and demanding world” making it difficult to remain “calm and collected.”

“As this Parliament has successfully demonstrated over the years, one hallmark of leadership in such a fast-moving world is allowing sufficient room for quiet thinking and contemplation which can enable deeper consideration of how challenges and opportunities can be best addressed,” Her majesty continued.

The statement may be interpreted as a subtle reprimand to Nicola Sturgeon to end her proposition for the Scottish independence from UK. Scotland’s first minister was adamant that Scotland shall remain in the European Union after the Brexit. She immediately threatened to call for a second independence referendum and hastened to Brussels to meet with European leaders, insisting that Scotland would “play our part in a stronger Europe”.

The opening of the Scottish parliament commenced with the entrance of the Royal Company of Archers leading the procession. The Duke of Hamilton and Brandon then entered carrying the Scottish crown followed by the leaders of five political parties.

The Royal Week—the traditional period where is in Scotland to carry out her duties—also saw the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attend a church service at the Canongate Kirk. She is also slated to hold an Investiture and host a garden party at Hollyroodhouse, her official residence in Scotland.
